Mandela Rhodes Scholarship is an opportunity to help African scholars pursue their postgraduate ( Honour and Master Degree programs) in selected Universities in South Africa.

The scholarship aims to keep the legacy and impact of Nelson Mandela alive by empowering young Africans. 

Because Mandela Rhode is a fully funded program, it covers a wide range of academic disciplines except MBA programs. It provides a financial and leadership development program to help candidates solve Africa’s most difficult challenges.

To benefit from this opportunity, you must be curious and determined about doing the internal work of leadership.

You must maintain a high level of English proficiency as all academic work and medium of tuition in South African universities is in English.

The scholarship program does not cover the visa fee if you are selected. Therefore, you will need to prepare your visa fee as soon as you receive the scholarship offer from the chosen university.

Mandela Rhodes Scholarship Requirements:

For you to be eligible, you must meet the following requirements-

1. Citizenship: You must be a citizen of any African country
2. Age Limit: You must be between the ages of 19 to 29 age as of the time of application for you to qualify for the scholarship opportunity 
3. Academic Excellence: The Mandela Rhode Scholarship is very competitive. You must be academically strong with an outstanding result of 70% and above or an upper second. 
4. Leadership Trait: Demonstrate a high sense of leadership qualities with instances of your previous leadership roles in your community 
5. Possess the Required Documents: You should possess the documents the participating universities require.

Documents Required for the Scholarship 

• Recommendation Letters: Provide three reference letters duly signed by three different referees. The letters must be written in English and submitted during registration.
• Degree certificate: Provide the certificate of completion for your recent academic studies.
• Transcript: A fully stamped Transcript of your institution will be needed in English Language 
• ID card and Passport: your citizenship ID card and passport photograph are to be made ready. 
• Essay Letters: You are to write two essay letters, one explaining your special journey and the other answering questions about your principal.
• South Africa Qualification Agency Certificate: When you get to the second and third rounds of the application, the South Africa Qualification Agency will verify your academic qualifications to ensure it meets its standards. Afterwards, a certificate will be issued so you can move to the next phase.

The Mandela Rhode Scholarship was launched in 2003 in Honour of Nelson Mandela and Cecil Rhodes, the two significant personalities in the history of South Africa.

The application date for the 2024 academic year starts 14th March and ends April 2024. 

The scholarship opportunity is only available to students accepted to study at one of its participating South African universities. If you are not admitted to any of these universities, then your application is null and void.

You are eligible to apply for this scholarship opportunity while still undergoing your bachelor’s degree program, but be sure your current program will be completed before the scholarship starts in 2025.

After the application deadline, you will be notified of a physical interview for the final round of selection by the end of August.

The physical interview will be conducted at a designated venue within the country by October, and the result will be announced within the same month.

The scholarship allowances are paid twice a year; you must provide evidence of registration at the start of the year. After that, you will also be required to provide a progress report from your university two weeks after the beginning of your second semester.

Your tuition and registration fee will be paid directly to your university, while the other benefits and allowances will be given directly to you by the scholarship body.

When given the scholarship offer, you must attend its leadership programs to ensure its continuity. These programs are the residential workshop, Regional pod and voluntary Mentoring program.
