Tetfund scholarship for university lecturers provides an opportunity for university lecturers to upgrade their academic qualifications while still on their lecturing jobs.

If you are given the scholarship, you will be provided with funds and financial aid to study a master’s degree (MA, MEd, MSc, etc.) or a doctorate program (PhD, DSc, DLitt, etc.) within the country or abroad.

It only provides support for postgraduates on a full-time study. Those on part-time or undergoing an online master’s or doctorate degree program are not eligible to be sponsored by Tetfund.

Tetfund scholarship is based strictly on nomination and recommendation. The university where you lecture (Beneficiary institution) will be notified by Tetfund to recommend a few lecturers/academic staff who have shown excellent working competence for the scholarship.

Few persons will be nominated, and their needs sent to Tetfund by the university officials.

When selected and given the opportunity to further your education and upgrade your qualifications in Nigeria by the Tetfund committee, you are to ensure you study only in a university with the National University Commission (NUC) approved graduate courses.

Studying in the university where you are working will be disallowed and not be accepted by the Tetfund committees.

If you are also given the privilege to further your studies abroad, you are to enroll in the university that is ahead of the best universities in Nigeria as of that time of application.

Benefits of Tetfund Scholarship for University Lecturers

Tetfund will provide monetary assistance and funds which will help lecturers complete their postgraduate degree programs with ease.

Specifically the funds provided will be provided according to study type and  program categories 

  • Local sponsorship for PhD in science based disciplines is N1,500,000 per annum while other disciplines is N1,200,000
  • Local sponsorship for Master degree for science based disciplines is N1,500,000 per annum while other disciplines is N1,200,000
  • Provision and allocation of funds for foreign studies.

The funds provided will be allocated to use as thus:-

  • A maximum of 30% of allocation is to be spent on postdoctoral fellowship 
  • A maximum of 30% of allocation is to be spent on foreign scholarship 
  • At least 30% of the allocation is to be spent on sponsoring scholars in Nigerian universities 
  • A maximum of 10% of the  allocation is to be spent on bench work

Before you can become eligible to apply for this scholarship, you must meet the following requirements 

  1. Profession: You must be a certified lecturer in any recognized university in Nigeria
  2. Admission: You must have secured your admission to continue your postgraduate program within and outside the country before applying for the Tetfund Scholarship 
  3. Single program: the Tetfund Scholarship covers those studying for a single postgraduate program.You must be applying to study for your second master or PhD program. 
  4. Benefactor of other scholarships: if you are a current benefactor of other postgraduate scholarship, you are no eligible to apply 
  5. Medical Fitness Proof: You must provide a certificate of medical fitness  from public hospitals only to be able to apply

How to Apply for Tetfund Scholarship for University Lecturers

To apply for the Tetfund scholarship, your beneficiary institution should submit your name among the  list of  recommended candidates qualified for the scholarship alongside the minutes of the selection committee meeting.

The committee includes the Tetfund intervention implementation committee, the Academic Board committee or the committee of deans and directors.

After  being nominated and your name successfully sent to Tetfund by your institution, you are to submit a hard and soft copy of the  documents listed above and a tuition fee invoice of your study institution to the  Tetfund email(1) addresses(2)

The tuition fee invoice provided should contain the following 

  • Your  full name.
  • Bank Account details of the institution where the tuition fee will be paid.
  • the total payable amount for the course duration.
  • Sort code
  • ABA Routing Number (for USA institutions), SWIFT/BIC code, IBAN Number ( for Europe and UK institutions), Transit code( for Canada institutions) and IFSC( for Indian institutions)

After submitting these credentials correctly, you will be issued a scholarship award letter through your institution with your entitlement, fees and other conditions clearly stated.

You must take approval from Tetfund before commencing your program of study.

Final Thoughts

The Tetfund scholarship sponsorship for PhD courses is for a maximum duration of four years, while that of a master’s degree program does not exceed two years in Nigeria and one year in Europe.

But for sponsorship in other countries like Malaysia, India, Taiwan, Thailand, North America, and the United Arab Emirates, the master’s degree program lasts for a period of two years.

You would be paid your living expenses through your institution, which will release them to you to commence your studies.

If you are being sponsored outside the country, it is recommended and mandatory that your beneficiary institution opens a domiciliary bank account to ease the administration of funds.

Yearly progress reports about how your study program under the scholarship scheme will be monitored and recorded by your beneficiary institution. The institution then provides this report to Tetfund based on their approved reporting template.

Failure to provide this report will affect subsequent disbursement of funds to you; therefore, you are to ensure you maintain a sound academic record and focus mainly on your studies without distractions.

If you want to commence your study program by September, you are mandatorily required to submit your application for sponsorship to Tetfund before the 31st of May. If you desire to start by January of the coming year, you are to submit before the 31st of September 2024.
